Dallas needs a nice warm blanket for her bed. Did I run down to Walmart and buy something? No. I decided to do it the hard way. So, I am making her a Sunbonnet Sue Quilt! It is going to be really cute when its finished! My mother has a quilt with different fabrics on each block, and I can remember looking at them all, and choosing which fabrics and colors I liked best. It was my favorite blanket to put on my bed, and is what inspired me to make my first quilt.Dallas' quilt, with the exception of the background fabric and the backing, is made from fabric I already had and fabric my Mom sent me. Many of theses fabrics are ones Dallas has had clothes made out of! I did let her choose two new fabrics from Joanns, to make sure from the start she felt like she had a part in making the quilt.
I started out by making a template. I looked around online and found Sunbonnet Sue patterns and printed several out. Dallas and I chose the one we liked best, made a few modifications, and then I traced it onto template stuff.
Then I traced bonnets, dresses, shoes, arms and hands onto Heat n Bond. This was ironed onto the backside of the fabrics, and then cut out. I now had pieces of fabric ready to stick to the background fabric.
Dallas helped choose which bonnets went with which dresses. We had a lot of fun switching them around until we found the right combos! Then we layed them out ont he background fabric to make sure they still looked ok.
